Phase III Clinical Trial For Critical Limb Ischemia Utilizes Stem Cells

Posted by davids@stemsave.com on Feb 2, 2018 1:50:00 PM

0517_EVT_CFAlex_Fig4.pngPhase III clinical trials were announced for an autologous [the patient’s own] stem cell treatment to restore blood vessels and reestablish blood flow following critical limb ischemia (CLI). Ischemia is a lack of blood to an area in the body, typically due to a blood clot, and is common in diabetics and other patients whose conditions result in damage or clotting in the blood vessels. In extreme cases, ischemia can lead to painful ulcers, gangrene and even amputation, given that cells in the area of decreased blood flow begin to die rapidly. The treatment seeks to facilitate re-vascularization through the administration of both blood stem cells and endothelial progenitor cells, which form the walls of blood vessels.

In Phase II clinical trials preceding the upcoming Phase III trials, of more than 100 patients who suffered from either pain or ulcers due to CLI, most saw significant improvement of blood flow, and for some participants, ulcers and pain were completely eradicated. Imaging of the blood vessels of patients at the start of the trial compared to 12 months after treatment showed significant regeneration of blood vessels. Following successful Phase III clinical trials, the treatment could soon be available for the millions of individuals enduring the pain and discomfort of CLI.

Advances in stem cell based regenerative treatments are creating more effective treatment options for patients suffering from a wide variety of disease, trauma and injury. To learn more about stem cells, and how families can bank their own valuable stem cells by recovering the very powerful dental pulp stem cells during routine dental procedures; such as wisdom teeth extractions or the during the loss of baby teeth, visit StemSave or call 877-783-6728 (877-StemSave) today.
